If you want to avoid double taxation and benefit from the UAE’s Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA) with other countries, applying for a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is an essential step. The TRC proves your tax residency in the UAE and helps optimize cross-border transactions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying:

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Before applying, ensure you meet the criteria for a TRC:

  • For Individuals: You’re eligible if you’ve lived in the UAE for at least 183 days in the last 12 months, or 90 days if you’re a UAE citizen, GCC national, or permanent resident with a job or business in the UAE.
  • For Companies: A company is eligible if it is formed or recognized under UAE law and is managed and controlled within the country.

Step 2: Log In to the FTA Portal

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, log in to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) portal. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to sign up first. After logging in, navigate to the "Create Tax Residency Certificate" section.

Step 3: Submit the Application

Complete the application form by filling in your personal or company details. Be sure to upload all necessary documents:

  • For Individuals: Passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, salary certificate, tenancy contract, bank statements for the past six months, and a report from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs regarding your stay in the UAE.
  • For Companies: Trade license, passports and Emirates IDs of shareholders and managers, company lease agreement, bank statements for the last six months, and audited financial statements.

Step 4: Review and Submit

Before submitting, double-check that all information is accurate and complete. Incomplete or incorrect applications may be rejected, so ensure you’ve provided all required documents.

Step 5: Receive Your TRC

Once your application is approved, the Federal Tax Authority will issue the TRC. The process typically takes 5-7 business days. You can download the certificate directly from the FTA portal once it’s ready.

Benefits of a Tax Residency Certificate

A TRC allows you to benefit from the UAE’s Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements with over 100 countries. It helps you avoid being taxed twice on the same income, ensuring smoother and more cost-effective cross-border transactions.
